Why is Turkey so dangerous for journalists?
Can this happen in the United States? Why or why not?

Why is Turkey so dangerous for journalists?

  1. Turkey doesn't have a free press like the United States. This allows the government to crack down and censor the media who they may feel is a threat.

As things stand right now, it is unlikely this could happen in the US. At least on the scale its seen in Turkey. However, the new administration has made it no secret that they distrust journalists. They have made every attempt to delegitimize the press. If Trump is allowed to manipulate the rules regarding free press, as he has stated he will do, then who knows what could happen?

Turkey's government has no problem with censorship. If they deem a certain journalist a threat, they come up with an excuse to silence him or her. The excuse could be terrorism, anti state activities, or insulting Islam. Bottom line: not a free press.

  2. Turkey is dangerous for journalists due to not having free press as the US does. There is also active war and other situations happening surrounding Turkey, making everyone walk on eggshells.
It can happen in the United States. However, maybe not to the extent that it is happening in Turkey. President Elect Donald Trump has made it clear that anything that could damage him as a "role model" for the states is seen as fake news. Legally nothing can dramatically happen to the press by Trump due to our protected rights of free speech given in the first amendment.

  3. Turkey is dangerous for journalists because there is no free press like the United States. In addition, Turkey is close to the countries that are in the midst of the wars. Around borders of Syria and Iraq, there are really dangerous places because of the wars and terrorisms.

It can happen in the United States, but in the U.S., there is free press so not happening like Turkey I think.

  4. Since there is no free press, Turkey is extremely dangerous for journalists. With the new POTUS, It may happen (but not as extreme as in Turkey), simply because Trump is very vocal about his opinions on everything, which are not in favor of the press.

  5. Turkey does not have a free press and that makes it much easier to charge journalists when the government disagrees with them. As long as our government doesn't change the First Amendment, then we should not have a problem to this extreme. Say what you want about the media, but they are protected by the constitution.

  6. Turkey is dangerous for journalists because there are no freedom of press in this country. Threfore, it is easier for the government to jail journalist for content that they do not approve. I think that America will not encounter this danger as long as the first amendment still exist.

  8. Turkey is dangerous because a free press does not exist. Journalists are not protected. They receive death threats, punishments and fines. Media is controlled by the government and regulated throughly. I don’t believe this could happen in the U.S., because journalists are protected under the First Amendment.

  9. Turkey is dangerous for journalism because of the simple fact they don't have freedom of the press. This means journalist are not protected and could receive punishment, threats, or even termination. The media is also controlled by the government, so they are able to filter media and news anyway they feel. This couldn't happen in the U.S. because the First Amendment allows us this right, freedom of the press.

  10. The main reason Turkey is so dangerous for journalist is due to the fact they have no free press. This means that basically anytime they disagree with journalists they are easily at risk. I don't necessarily believe this could happen in the United States due to First Amendment protection. In the event that the First Amendement no longer exists, there would definitely be a lot of potential for this possibility.

  11. Turkey is dangerous for journalists because their authoritarian regime is using the press as an outlet for the state's propaganda efforts. If you disagree with the state, you get jailed for it.

I could see this happening in the U.S. sometime down the road, but I don't think it is an imminent threat. There are a lot of people disillusioned with the media right now, but quelling the free press is not the solution.

  12. Without having free press and censoring what can be publicized, turkey's government is operating under a type of authoritarian administration that has made it ultimately life threatening for journalists to live within these rules.

I do not see this happening in the U.S. although we are protected under the 1st Amendment, journalists still continue face scrutiny, persecution and death threats. however, it doesn't come close to being like turkey.

  13. Through the combination of a lack of free press, and an authoritarian type government, Turkey has become one of the most dangerous places in the world for journalists. Any disagreements with the state can and will result in censorship or harsher consequences.

While anything is possible, the United States turning into such a dangerous place for journalists would require the both the collapsing of the free press and the shift into a more authoritarian government. President elect Trump has mentioned a distrust in the press, but extreme actions would have to occur for the U.S. to resemble Turkey in any major way.

  14. Turkey is so dangerous for reporters/journalists due to not having free press. Any news article or piece disagreeing with the what Turkey deems to be the accepted viewpoint could and will have consequences.

I personally do not believe we will ever get anywhere near that point. While Trump has voiced his displeasure with the media, I doubt he intends to completely control it as Turkey does.

  15. Turkey's journalists are in danger due to the lack in free press. Because of this, they risk their lives and reputations exposing the truth or are otherwise filtered and censored by their government. As long as we continue to value the First Amendment, America shouldn't worry about losing the right to free press.

  16. Because of the press reporting in a critical way of the government, in combination with Turkey not having free press is what makes being a journalist in Turkey so dangerous.

I do not believe this could happen in America, due to the courts having so many rulings on the side of the First Amendment. The courts have done very well on ruling in favor of journalists, so the thought of a journalist being jailed for what he has written against the government is not very likely

  17. Turkey gives its journalists practically no protection compared to countries with free press. I do not believe the United States will have the level of mistreatment that journalists face in other countries, but I believe that Trump more than any other incoming President of the United States has repeatedly and unabashedly attacked the press.
